healing moment: breath prayers from Sarah Bessey (erin jean warde)
When I was getting sober, one line prayers were vital. They gave me somewhere to turn when I felt I had nowhere to go, they helped me with my self-talk, and they helped me connect with God.
breath prayers from Sarah Bessey
Today, my healing moment is not from me — instead, I’m sharing a resource I deeply appreciate.
When I was getting sober, one line prayers and affirmations were vital. They gave me somewhere to turn when I felt I had nowhere to go, they helped me with my self-talk, they helped me release shame, and duh: they helped me connect with God when I desperately needed to connect with God.
Recently, Sarah Bessey wrote a Substack with 12 New Breath Prayers, and I hope you’ll check it out. She even shares how you might practice breath prayers. (Her Substack — Field Notes — is also worth subscribing to, in my humble opinion.)
Here are my 3 favorites:
Inhale: I can plant seeds for my own joy on purpose,
Exhale: I steadily tend to that flourishing and hope for a harvest of delight.Inhale: I am content with who I am,
Exhale: I am a proud owner of everything that can’t be bought.Inhale: Absolutely nothing can come between me and the love of God,
Exhale: I am always embraced by Jesus.
Sarah also wrote breath prayers for the book she edited, A Rhythm of Prayer: A Collection of Meditations for Renewal, if you love her Substack post and want to expand your breath practice.
I hope this resource finds you where you are, how you are, however it is that you are.
Thank you, Sarah. <3

Ooh thank you for directing us this way.
I especially love from her prayers:
Inhale: Pleasure is part of why we were created,
Exhale: I enter into the joy in every good gift from Mother God.
