healing moment: stay the course (erin jean warde)
We don’t always need more healing tools, sometimes we need to return to the healing we already know. Sometimes we just need to stay the course.
healing moment: stay the course
I stared into the document titled “healing moment” and my whole brain went blank. I started looking around my home, wondering if an idea would jump out at me. I started to think of healing tools, but they were things I have already shared. And of course I want to offer something “new and exciting.”
I’m the person who wants new practices. I want more things to do. I want to know how to hack this thing (whatever it is). And of course I am this person, of course I have these wants — I’m a recovery coach, so I spend a large amount of my time trying to help people practically heal. And that’s good! We need tools and practices!
But we also need to sit with the wisdom we’ve already gained. Sometimes we need to just keep practicing the practices we’re already doing. We don’t always need more healing tools, sometimes we need to return to the healing we already know. Sometimes we just need to stay the course.
I keep wanting to add more, because I think in some ways I’m trying to rush the process. Like, surely if I do more things the healing time will pass faster. Surely if I find something new to try it will be the magic fix I’ve been searching for.
But of course, no matter how much I do, healing continues to move at a glacial pace, and no matter how much I try, I’ve never found a magic fix, because none such exists.
So this week, I wonder if the healing tool for us is to not try any more healing tools. Not forever — again: healing tools are good! I am a fan! — but we always have times when we need a break from the new, the more, the something else added to our lives.
Maybe this week we sit with the healing wisdom we already have. Maybe this week we trust in what we are already doing. Maybe this week we stay the course.
